Spring Chickens

Our chickens came last night! We got 10 of them. These are almost guaranteed to be hens since we ordered them from a hatchery. It still seems funny to me that baby chicks can be sent through the mail. The post office is a little insistent that they get picked up quickly though.

Because the baby chicks are so small and get cold so easy, they are living in my kitchen. I don't mind it while they are small like this. In about a month they will be big, stinky, and loud. Then, they will get moved outside. We will have to introduce them to the hens we currently have... and do it slowly. Hopefully they will all be friends. :) For now, we let them grow and stay warm. We plan on having eggs from them about the end of September. If all goes according to plan, we should be getting close to a dozen eggs a day! :)

Happy spring! (even though I brought them home in a snow storm....)
